Description of Classes

Puppy

This class is designed for the puppy from two to six months old who has never taken a training class before.  The pup will have the opportunity to socialize with both humans and other dogs, engage in off-leash playtime, and learn some obedience fundamentals such as sit, down, stand, short stays, and basic loose leash walking.  Owners will learn how to approach training and discipline in a positive manner during the most crucial social growth stage in their dog’s development.

back to the schedule

Puppy II

This class is available to the puppy who has successfully participated in a positive-reinforcement puppy class that includes off-leash socialization within the past six months and who is under one year of age.  During this class the pup will practice strengthening his attention to the owner, proper greeting behaviors to both dogs and humans, more precise sits and downs, loose leash walking, down- and sit-stays, “leave-it” and a recall that is truly reliable.  Because pup has a proven history of good play behaviors in class, there will be off-leash playtime to keep these skills fresh and the experience positive.

back to the schedule

Dog I

This class is for the dog of six months and older who has never taken a training class before.  The owner will learn how to precisely signal his dog’s correct response with a small hand-held “clicker” and reward it so that it will more likely happen again.  Obedience exercises such as sit, stand, down, and stay are introduced, as are loose-leash walking, polite greetings, “leave-it”, attention and the really reliable recall – skills crucial to the pet dog living in our society.  The owner will gain a better understanding of what dogs need and can be expected to achieve through discussions of how to positively approach conundrums that arise with dogs in the household.

back to the schedule

Dog II

This class follows Pet Dog I and Puppy II.   The dog will gain much more self-control and confidence by working through a variety of distractions, thereby strengthening behaviors he has previously learned.  He will learn to focus on his owner even when food (or a favorite toy!) is on the floor beside them and then “leave it” to follow the owner when asked.  He will practice proper greeting behavior under a variety of circumstances, longer sit- and down-stays, and he will continue to succeed in reliably recalling even when the environment beckons.  Owners help shape this course by suggesting behaviors they would like to work on during their set of classes.

Doggie Playtime

It is very difficult to keep our dogs properly exercised during the winter months. So to help our dogs stay happy, exercised and social towards other dogs and people, we are offering Huntington’s first doggie playtime! Small dogs and puppies will be separated from larger dogs A trainer will be on site to observe dogs! Enjoy a wonderful cup of coffee or hot chocolate from Coffee D’Vine, then sit back and enjoy your dog’s favorite night of the entire week!

Rally O (Rally Obedience)

This class showcases a new sport for owners and their dogs that is fun! In this sport the owner can talk to their dog, unlike the traditional competition obedience. The team moves from station to station performing the requested behavior posted at each station. Rally provides a link from the Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) program to obedience or agility competition, both for dogs and handlers. In addition, rally promotes fun and enjoyment for dogs at all levels of competition.

Prerequisites: The dog needs to have a basic understanding of how to walk on a loose leash, as well as knowing how to sit at handler's left side, sit in front, and perform a down.

Canine Good Citizen©

The purpose of the American Kennel Canine Good Citizen Program is to ensure that our favorite companion, the dog, can be a respected member of the community. Although it is not a competition title, it is an achievable honor to which many pet dogs (and their owners!) can aspire. To receive the CGC© certificate, dogs take the 10 item Canine Good Citizen Test at the end of the course. There is no need for a dog to be registered with the AKC to participate in the program. Clicker training is not a prerequisite skill but a positive attitude is! Correction-based training methods or equipment are not acceptable in this class.

Agility I (Introduction to Obstacles)

This class will allow you to enjoy the great experience of Canine Agility, and is designed for dogs and handlers with little or no agility experience. Positive reinforcement will be used to teach dogs how to manage the obstacles and learn the jumping techniques. Agility is a fun and great way to promote bonding with one's dog. Basic on-lead obedience is required. This course will be offered twice this semester, as noted below.

back to the schedule

Agility II (Sequences)

This class will build upon agility introduction as well as focusing on handler skills that will help guide your dog through and over all equipment. Sure to be a "hit" with both handler and dog.

back to the schedule

Dancing with Dogs

During this class with a certified massage therapist, you will learn massage techniques to help ease the pain of arthritis and aches and pains of aging, relieve muscle injury, increase blood circulation and help your dog relax. The last two classes are hands-on as you learn massage sequence. Your best friend will love you for it! Note: Do not bring dog to first class.

TTouch

The Tellington TTouch is a specialized approach to the care and training of our animal companions during which the handler performs circular movements of the fingers and hands all over the animals body. The intent of the TTouch is to activate the function of the cells and awaken cellular intelligence - a little like "turning on the electric lights of the body." It is based on cooperation and respect, offers a positive approach to training, can improve performance and health and presents solutions to common behavioral and physical problems. It also helps establish a deeper rapport between humans and animals through increased understanding and more effective communications.

Yoga For You - Doga Your Dog!

Using traditional poses your dog will be incorporated, not only relaxing you, but also your dog. When you relax, it rubs off onto your dog and he relaxes deepening the relationship between you and your dog. Dogs have naturally practiced yoga for years and their ability for natural tranquility of their minds as well as their ability to be in the moment and their contended outlook. These abilities are widely considered to be the result of their long and devoted practice of doga.
